Founder
Dear Reader… My name is Myra, and I am the founder of Angel Pavilion and Cheerful Chai coffee shop. Thank you for taking the time to find out a little bit more about the path that led me to creating a multi-purpose space. One that has evolved and become a haven for its users.
Where to start. I guess by sharing that I am the proud mother of two boys and an advocate as well as lover of life, books, adventure, people, culture and diversity in all its forms.
“Love is love”
And I assure you that everyone
is welcome here.
My professional background combines experience in two key areas. Firstly, having left university with a BSc in Mathematics and Computing, I was unaware of what I wanted to do longer term. I began a role with the S3 group and completed my six- month training period within three. Whilst this secured my role as an IT recruitment consultant, I wanted opportunity to lead my own market. After a series of rigorous processes including presentations to the directors, I was given the IBM Mainframe and AS400 recruitment market throughout London and surrounding regions to take on. I found the role exhilarating and thoroughly enjoyed my time at head office where I hit ‘top biller’ status early on.
So why move on? Well, life as we know, is consequential and as such I decided to embark on further qualifications by studying for a PGCE in order to make a planned career change into education.
To say that I fell in love I have gained significant experience as an educational practitioner in various guises having been fast tracked into leadership roles form the outset. I embraced these opportunities as there was and continues to be a need for youngsters and adults alike to see more role models from a ‘global majority background’.
I was also able to share information and support my colleagues on more cohesive approaches within schools. In 2013, I moved from London to Chelmsford and took a short-term step back to became Head of Maths for CCHS. This allowed me capacity to rebuild life with two young boys in a new community.
Educational Philosophy runs deep in my veins, and I have always believed in a pedagogical approach that focusses on building confidence within a child to enhance achievement, but more importantly to embed a desire to learn. ‘Maths with Myra’ was born a few years ago and I continue to give my time to it. I left CCHS a few years later, to return to leadership back in London. Having previously completed my headship qualification, the aspiration was to reach this level within my career at the time.
However, during a few transitional years in life, I came across a run-down, derelict building in the middle of a green field, which we now know as Angel Meadow in Broomfield (just outside Chelmsford). To say that I fell in love with it, would be an understatement and despite not looking for such a project, it was clearly waiting for me to roll my sleeves up and save it from ‘disappearing’ altogether. At the time, this space was home to Broomfield Football Club. So, I knew I had a responsibility to save what was a valued part of the local history which led to an internal struggle to determine what my purpose was in life. A passion was ignited within and a real determination to do something which my previous life may only have permitted me to dream of, now seemed possible.
My vision for this space was very clear.
“Community Cohesion through Collaboration”
I grew up feeling as though I didn’t ever quite ‘fit in’. I tried hard to find or create a place for myself along the way but it took a long time to realise I am fine as I am and my people will find me. But one of my core values is wanting to bring people together in an inclusive manner and that has remained at the heart of all my decisions. My vision for this space was very clear. “Community Cohesion through Collaboration”, whilst ensuring wellbeing continued to be at the forefront of my thinking, during the evolution process.
I love Chelmsford. It is the first place where I have truly felt ‘at home’ in many ways, so to set up a space for my Broomfield family felt right. I promised that the space would develop based on the needs of its people and I am in awe of the way this community has come together to take shared ownership and responsibility for a space that has become a true community hub. From the individuals who run their own projects here at the pavilion, through to my wonderful team of staff who take care of everyone that walks through the doors of our coffee shop, the shared ethos for ‘people’ and ‘happiness’ is evident.
The next phase of our evolution involves a two-pronged approach. Firstly, to work on filling some of the gaps our residents have mentioned and bring in people, groups, skills and opportunities to empower them on their doorstep.
Secondly, and equally as important is the branching out of our-skills to a wider ‘community’ by replicating some of the practices we have witnessed succeed. Becoming a force beyond here alone and in turn empowering even more people.
Cheerful Chai coffee shop was born from a desire to provide refreshments and treats to users of the venue as well as walkers and passers-by. What has evolved from the little ‘take away hatch’ is another story.
And you can visit our sister website to understand more about the Cheerful Chai journey here. here. My team & I will always do our best, to make you feel welcome and as though you are a ‘guest in our home’.
Thank you to all the people who have been my strength behind the scenes and kept me going when times were difficult along the way. You know who you are. You know the difficulties and challenges this space has had to encounter – but together ‘we’ made it happen.
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone
across the waters to create many ripples”
– Mother Teresa.
I am truly humbled by what continues to evolve from the ripples.
Love, Myra
